The WaterShed team put the original freestanding rainwater harvester into operation in August of 2010, with the first commercial installation in November of 2010. The WaterShed offers a simple, durable and affordable means of harvesting, storing and distributing substantial quantities of high quality water to support urban-friendly agriculture. (visit watersheddesigns.com) Watersheds can be adapted to work virtually anywhere in the world. With the burgeoning awareness and interest in sustainability and renewable resources, including rainwater harvesting, I figured hoards of customers would be beating a path to our door. Was I ever wrong !!! (Why Harvest the Rain?) (IN PDF)
Portland Oregon is an epicenter of environmentally responsible thinking and action, but sustainable water is just not on our radar yet. We have the Portland / Multnomah Climate Action Plan, the Multnomah Food Action Plan, and the Portland Parks & Rec Community Garden Toolkit. These three documents total 118 pages, but water is only mentioned 11 times. (see the last page of the attached report-in PDF.) If no issue is perceived, then no solution is necessary, which pretty much sums up how we got into this mess to begin with. (What global warming?)
When the issue of supplying sustainable water to support urban-friendly farming finally surfaces here, then the WaterShed will be a viable product and a sustainable business will be born. Until that day, my mission is to raise awareness of both the critical importance and the enormous potential of harvesting rainwater. (please see the report: Rainwater compared to Tap Water – in PDF)
Local communities, including Portland, are taking the initiative to create their own food security and economic stability. That's revolutionary! Locally-based, renewable water resources such as rainwater must inevitably be tapped to grow these sustainable, healthy, low-maintenance communities. The WaterShed team needs financial support, collaboration & whatever you can think of to forward this movement. Please help us.
